The Midland & South Western Junction Railway, started from Cheltenham, passed through the very heart of the Great Western at Swindon and on through Marlborough to reach Andover and finally through an arrangement with the London & South Western Railway to Southampton. A cash strapped route from the outset, it finally closed as a through line in 1961
