The Waverley Route is the scenic stretch of line that ran from Edinburgh to Carlisle via Hawick, crossing some of the most remote moorland and bleak mountain landscapes in the British Isles. Closed controversially in 1969, campaigners were rewarded when the Scottish parliament approved the re-opening of a 30- mile section from Edinburgh to Tweedmouth and services on the new Borders Railway started in September 2015. This lovely book presents stunning coverage of the old line with some rare photographs, together with coverage of the new line under construction and in operation, giving an interesting 'then and now' perspective. The authors also look at what's left of the original route to Carlisle (which may one day open again) and show how much can still be seen and enjoyed today, albeit on foot!
